Laptop Has Power But No Display? Repair in Accra
The lights come on, the fan spins, maybe you even hear Windows start — but the screen stays black. This is a different fault from a laptop that won't turn on at all, and it can come from the screen, the display cable, the memory or the board. A few checks narrow it down quickly.
If there are no lights or fan at all, see laptop won't turn on.

Signs of a no-display fault
- The power light and fan are on, but the screen is black
- You hear the startup sound, or the Caps Lock light responds, but nothing shows on screen
- A very faint picture is visible with a torch
- The screen goes black right after the logo appears
- Beeps or flashing lights when you press power (an error code)
Common causes
Backlight or screen fault
The screen is receiving a picture but not lighting it up, or the panel itself has failed.
Display cable
A loose or damaged cable between the board and the screen.
Memory (RAM)
Loose or faulty RAM often gives power with no display, sometimes with beeps or flashing lights.
Graphics or motherboard fault
If an external monitor also shows nothing, the fault is on the board.
Windows or BIOS problem
Sometimes the laptop starts but Windows fails to display — for example after a failed update.
What you can check first
- Turn up the brightness with the function keys (often Fn plus a sun icon).
- Connect an external monitor or TV by HDMI and press Windows + P to switch display. A picture there means the laptop screen or its cable is the fault.
- Shine a torch close to the screen. A faint picture means a backlight problem.
- Hard reset: unplug the charger, hold the power button for 30 seconds, then try again.
- Count any beeps or light flashes — they are error codes that help us diagnose the fault.

Frequently asked questions
Why does my laptop turn on but the screen stays black?
The usual causes are a backlight or screen fault, a display cable problem, faulty RAM, or a graphics/motherboard fault. Testing with an external monitor tells us whether it is the screen or the board.
Is a black laptop screen always a broken screen?
No. Often the screen is fine and the cause is the cable, the memory or a software problem. That is why we diagnose before replacing anything.
My laptop beeps and shows nothing. What does that mean?
Beeps and flashing lights are error codes from the laptop's BIOS. They often point to memory or graphics problems. Note the pattern and tell us when you bring the laptop in.
How much does it cost?
