Signs your laptop battery needs replacing
- The laptop switches off as soon as the charger is removed
- The battery percentage drops very fast, or jumps — for example from 40% straight to 0%
- Windows shows "Consider replacing your battery" or "Plugged in, not charging"
- A MacBook shows "Service Recommended" for the battery
- The touchpad, keyboard or bottom case is being pushed up — a sign of a swollen battery
- The laptop gets unusually hot around the battery area
Common causes
Normal wear
Laptop batteries lose capacity with every charge cycle. After a few years of daily use, many hold only a fraction of their original charge.
Heat
Using a laptop on a bed or cushion, or leaving it in a hot car, speeds up battery wear and can cause swelling.
Charger or charging circuit
Sometimes the battery is fine but is not being charged — because of a faulty charger, charging port or charging circuit. We check this before recommending a new battery.
Low-quality replacement batteries
Cheap batteries often have less real capacity than printed on them and can wear out within months.
What you can check first
- On Windows, open Command Prompt and run
powercfg /batteryreport. The report compares the battery's design capacity with its current full-charge capacity. - On a MacBook, open System Settings → Battery and check the battery health and maximum capacity.
- Try another wall socket and check the charger light and cable — a charging fault can look like a battery fault.
- If the battery is swollen, stop using and charging the laptop and bring it in. Do not press on it or try to remove it yourself.
